How to search volunteer listings by town, ZIP and distance
Clinton County is sixty miles end to end. The filter panel has a collapsed Distance section that takes your town and your mileage and hides the rest, with a couple of edges worth knowing.
Westport sits up at one end of Clinton County. Loganton sits down near the other. About sixty miles of river road, ridge and small towns lie in between, and the volunteer opportunities page hands you all of it in one list.
That is the trouble with a county-wide directory. A Wednesday evening shift in Renovo is a fine idea if you live in Renovo. From Beech Creek it is an hour each way in the dark.
The section that starts out closed
The filter panel down the left side of the opportunities page has a row marked "Distance". It stays collapsed until you click it, which is why plenty of people never find it. On a phone, tap "Filters" to open the panel first.
Three things sit inside. "Near town" is a menu that begins on "Choose a town". "Or ZIP code" takes five digits. "Radius" offers 5, 10, 15, 25, 40 and 75 miles, and starts on 10. Press "Apply distance" and the nearest listings rise to the top, under badges reading something like "Near: Lock Haven" and "Within 10 miles".
What the miles are actually measuring
The count runs from the middle of your town to the middle of the listing's town, in a straight line. It sorts the county into near and far. A ridge sitting between those two points does not enter into it, so something on the far side of one can read closer than it feels from behind the wheel. Treat the number as which end of the county rather than as a drive.
The listing's end of that measurement comes from the town its organization picked when posting. A listing with no town on it has no point on the map, so a radius search leaves it out however close it really is. When something you know about vanishes the moment you set a radius, that is usually the reason, and clearing the distance filter brings it back.
Where it trips people up
Fill in both a town and a ZIP code and the ZIP wins. The town is ignored, so empty the ZIP box if the town was what you meant.
Nine Clinton County ZIPs are on the map the radius reads from: 17721, 17726, 17745, 17748, 17750, 17751, 17764, 17778 and 17779. Type anything else, including a ZIP just over the county line, and a gold notice says so and the page goes back to showing every listing. The town menu is the surer route.
The "Closest to me" button above the results is a different tool. It asks your browser where you are and sorts by that, with no ring around anything, and pressing it wipes the town, ZIP and radius you had set. The Distance section is the one for planning at your kitchen table about a trip you have not made yet.
To take the ring off, press "Apply distance" once more with the menu back on "Choose a town" and the ZIP box empty. Your other filters stay where they are. "Clear all" beside the badges and "Reset" in the panel both start you over from nothing.
