Accessibility Statement
Volunteer Clinton County is committed to ensuring that this website is accessible to as many people as possible, regardless of technology, ability, or disability. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standard, and we continually work to improve the accessibility experience.
What we've done
- Keyboard navigation: All interactive elements — navigation, forms, buttons, and links — are operable via keyboard alone.
- Color contrast: We use text-to-background color combinations that meet or exceed WCAG AA contrast ratios.
- Screen reader support: Pages use semantic HTML with proper heading structure (H1 → H2 → H3), ARIA labels on interactive elements, and descriptive link text.
- Responsive design: The site works on screens from small mobile phones to large desktop monitors and adapts gracefully to browser zoom levels up to 200%.
- Focus indicators: All focusable elements display a visible focus ring to help keyboard users track their position on the page.
- Alternative text: Images and icons include alt text or are marked as decorative where appropriate.
- Form labels: All form inputs have associated labels. Error messages are descriptive and identify the specific field with the problem.
Known limitations
We are an early-stage project with a small team. Some areas may not yet meet our full accessibility goals:
- Some rich interactive components (such as the home page hero chooser) may not be fully optimized for all assistive technologies.
- User-generated content in org listings is not controlled by us and may not always meet accessibility standards.
We are actively working to improve these areas.
Technical approach
This site is built with Next.js (React) and rendered as HTML with semantic elements. We follow these practices:
- Semantic HTML5 elements:
<main>,<nav>,<header>,<footer>,<aside>,<section>. - ARIA attributes where HTML semantics alone are insufficient.
- Tailwind CSS with consistent design tokens for color and spacing.
- No use of
tabindexvalues above 0 to avoid disrupting natural tab order.
