The Notify me link most people scroll right past
Found a listing you liked but the day was wrong? One small link at the bottom of the card emails you when a matching one posts. Here is where it hides and what it will not cover.
Have you ever read a volunteer listing that was almost right, closed the tab, and known you would never think of it again?
That is roughly where a retired teacher in Avis ends up. She is reading about a tutoring program in Lock Haven, the kind of work she misses, and she reads the whole thing twice. Then she gets to the schedule. Tuesday mornings. Tuesday is the one day of the week she cannot do.
She would still like to hear when the next tutoring role opens up in Lock Haven. Checking the site every week is not going to happen, and making an account just to be told feels like more than the situation needs.
The link at the bottom of the card
Every volunteer listing has a "Ready to help?" card sitting beside the description. At the bottom of that card, next to "Print flyer", there is a small bell link reading "Notify me". Plenty of people scroll straight past it.
Click it and the link is replaced by one box reading "youremailcom" and a button. Type your address, press "Notify me" a second time, and that is the whole thing. No account is created and there is no password to remember. The organization is not told that you were interested, either.
The form then turns into a green line naming the cause you just signed up for, something like "You'll get an email when new Children & Youth listings post." A confirmation email arrives headed "You're signed up for alerts." Keep that one, because its "Unsubscribe" button is how you stop the alerts later.
Which listings actually reach you
After that, nothing happens until something matches. When a new volunteer opportunity posts in the same cause and the same town, an email goes out on Friday with up to five of them. On the weeks when nothing matched, no email goes out at all.
There is no menu of causes to pick from anywhere in the form. The alert quietly copies the cause and the town off the listing you signed up from, and a new listing has to match both before it reaches you, which makes the listing you choose your filter. So choose it on purpose. If the green line does not name a cause, that listing had none set, and you will hear about every new opportunity instead of a narrower slice. If you care about two different kinds of work, sign up once from a listing in each.
What arrives is newly posted volunteer opportunities, so events, donation drives and board openings will not turn up in it. Signing in gets you saved searches instead, a separate thing with their own daily or weekly setting. The bell link is the version for people who would rather not sign in at all.
Turning it off again
Stopping is as small as starting. Every alert email carries an "Unsubscribe" link at the bottom, one click removes the subscription, and the page that opens says "Unsubscribed." There is nothing to sign into.
Signing up a second time with the same address from the same listing does no harm. No duplicate subscription is created and no second confirmation goes out, even though the form tells you it worked both times.

The teacher in Avis spends about twenty seconds on the bell link and goes back to her evening. Whether the next Lock Haven tutoring role posts in three weeks or three months, remembering to look for it is no longer her job.
