Put your volunteer commitments on the calendar you already check

You find a shift you can make, you say yes, and then comes the second job: pick up the phone, open the calendar app, type the date, type the start time, type enough of the address that you will still recognize it in three weeks. Then do it again for the coat drive drop-off deadline. Then again for the fire company banquet. Most of us get two of the three in and lose the last one somewhere between the kitchen table and the truck.

There is a version of this where you type none of it. Your settings page can hand you one private web address. Your calendar app subscribes to that address once, and after that every commitment you take on arrives on its own date, beside your work shifts and your kid's ball games, with the organization named and a link back to the listing.

What rides along

Only the Going group on your My Commitments page. Anything marked Interested stays off, and so does anything you cancelled or already completed. Events carry whatever start and end time the organization posted, and land as all-day entries when no time was given. Opportunities, donation needs and board openings are always all-day. An opportunity that runs between two dates blocks out the whole stretch, and a board opening sits on the day its listing closes rather than on a meeting date. A listing with no date on it gets skipped, because a calendar entry needs a date to sit on.

The feed runs one direction. Nothing you type into Google, Apple or Outlook Calendar travels back to the site or reaches the organization, and cancelling a commitment is still done here. The site does rebuild the calendar fresh every time your app asks for it, so what arrives is right as of that request, but how often your app asks is up to the app, and some only check every few hours. Filling the Going group

Getting a listing in there takes one press on the listing itself. On an event the button reads "Mark as going". On an opportunity, a donation need or a board opening it reads "Track this". If you already pressed "I'm interested" on that listing, those buttons have turned into a switch, so press "Going" on the event or "Tracking" on anything else.

Generating the address

The card is called "Calendar subscription", and it sits farther down your settings page, which opens from your volunteer menu. Press "Generate link" and a long web address appears in a box under the status line.

Copy it right then. The site stores only a scrambled copy of that address, so it genuinely cannot show it to you a second time. "Regenerate link" is the way back if you lose it, and the fresh address replaces the old one, so any calendar still pointed at the old address quietly stops updating.

Then add it in Google, Apple or Outlook Calendar as a calendar you subscribe to by web address rather than a file you import. All three can do it, and all three bury the option somewhere different. Paste the address exactly as it was copied.

Anyone holding that address can read the list, which is why it is long and random and why it should not go in a group chat or a screenshot. It carries only your commitments, never your email, phone number or anything else on your profile. "Revoke link", in the same card, stops the address working immediately.

The Calendar subscription card wants one listing in your Going group before it will do anything, so the first press belongs on a listing.

Set that up once and the second job goes away for good. The date reaches your phone because the organization posted it, and your part was finished the moment you said yes.
