Put this week's real ask at the top of your organization page

Three people to unload a truck Saturday is too small for a posting and too useful to leave unsaid. Here is the one-line spot for it, and how it takes itself back down.

The ask sits above everything else on your public page

An organization page goes stale in a way nobody plans. The description is accurate, the phone number works, and everything on it was written to stay true for a year at a time. So a neighbor reading it in July learns plenty about who you are and nothing about what you are short of in July.

The real need moves faster than that. The fire company in Renovo has a donated equipment trailer coming Saturday and wants three people to help unload it. That is one morning of work for three neighbors. Writing it up as a full volunteer posting would take longer than the unloading, and the posting would still be sitting on the site in February.

The one-line spot

"Right now we need" is a short ask, 140 characters at most, that shows in a gold band near the top of your public organization page. You write it the way you would say it if somebody asked what you were short on this week, and you pick the day it stops being true.

It lands in more places than you type it. On your own page it shows twice: once in the header under your organization name, carrying the date you posted it, and again further down in a gold band reading "Right now we need:" just above your About section. Your card in the organizations directory picks it up as a "Needs this month" line, so somebody scrolling the whole county reads the ask without ever opening your page.

The date is doing the real work

The "Show until" box opens 30 days out and will not take a date more than 90 days from today. When the day arrives, the band leaves your page and the line leaves your directory card without anybody remembering to do it. Nothing is deleted from your profile. The ask simply stops showing.

That is what keeps a page from aging badly, because the visitor who lands on you in February never reads about a truck you unloaded in November. If the ask gets answered early, "Clear current need" takes it down on the spot.

Anything you need running longer than three months has outgrown a callout and probably wants a real posting instead.

What it is, honestly

Think of it as the chalkboard by the door rather than the sign-up sheet. It is a line of text and nothing more. Saving one emails nobody, no sign-up button attaches to it, it creates no record anyone can join, and it does not turn up in the filters people use to search the site. Whoever reads it gets in touch with you the ordinary way, the same as they would about anything else on your page.

Setting the callout takes the owner or manager role. If your role is poster or viewer, the Organization Profile page tells you that you are not an owner or manager, and the section is not there to fill in. Ask whoever holds the owner role to change your role or to write the callout themselves.

The same two boxes also sit on your dashboard under "What does your org need this week?", where the buttons read "Update callout" and "Clear callout". Same fields, whichever screen you happen to be on.

The trailer in Renovo arrives Saturday whether the rest of the county hears about it or not. One line and one date puts the ask on the page by lunchtime. Set your current callout.
