How to Help Animal Shelters Without Adopting
Volunteer Clinton County·May 12, 2026
You do not have to adopt to make a difference at the Clinton County SPCA or PAWS Humane Society. Here are the best ways to help.
Many people assume the only way to help an animal shelter is to adopt a pet. In reality, shelters rely on volunteers and donors just as much as adopters — often more.
DOG WALKING AND CAT SOCIALIZATION
Both the SPCA and PAWS need volunteers to walk dogs and spend time with cats every day of the week. Animals that are exercised and socialized regularly are happier, healthier, and more likely to be adopted. Dog walking shifts typically run 1-2 hours. No experience necessary — both organizations provide brief orientation and handling training.
FOSTER CARE
Fostering is not adopting: you are providing temporary housing for an animal while they recover from illness or injury, or while the shelter manages capacity during busy periods. The shelter provides all food and medical care.
SUPPLY DONATIONS
Both shelters run low on dry pet food, clean towels and blankets for animal use, paper towels, and cleaning supplies. Check the donation listings on this site for current needs before bringing items.
FUNDRAISING AND EVENTS
Both shelters hold annual fundraising events — walks, galas, and online campaigns — and need volunteers to staff them. This is a great option for people who are uncomfortable around animals but still want to support the cause.
SPREADING THE WORD
Sharing a shelter's adoptable animals on social media costs nothing and can change an animal's trajectory. Both the SPCA and PAWS post adoptable animals on their Facebook pages.
